Raised Loft Boarding
Raised loft boarding systems
Raised systems lift the storage floor on supports fixed to the joists, leaving room for insulation underneath. It is the method we usually look at first when a loft is already insulated.

Benefits
- Leaves space for insulation below the boarding rather than squashing it
- Can create a level storage surface over uneven joists
- Supports a ventilation gap between insulation and boards
- Can be combined with insulation top-ups during the same visit
What’s involved
- 1Measuring joist spacing, condition and existing insulation depth
- 2Selecting a support height suitable for the insulation being kept or installed
- 3Fixing supports to the joists and laying boards on top
- 4Checking that eaves ventilation paths are kept clear
Suitability & assessment
- The system must suit the existing structure, insulation and ventilation requirements of your loft.
- Raising the floor reduces headroom, so it’s worth considering how you’ll move about and reach items.
- Some lofts need structural or access considerations before boarding can be recommended.
