Loft Boarding
Loft boarding for more storage at home
Turn an awkward, hard-to-use loft into a tidy storage area. We plan the boarded area around how you’ll use it — where things go, how you reach them and how you get up there.

Benefits
- Free up cupboards, wardrobes and spare rooms
- Somewhere sensible for luggage, seasonal items and keepsakes
- A stable surface to move about on when reaching your belongings
- Works alongside new ladders, hatches and lighting for easier access
What’s involved
- 1A look at the loft’s size, access, joists, insulation and any services such as cables or pipework
- 2Agreeing the area to be boarded and where storage will be most useful
- 3Recommending a boarding method — usually a raised system where insulation is present
- 4Installing the boarding and leaving the area tidy
Suitability & assessment
- Loft boarding creates storage space. It is not a habitable loft conversion and isn’t intended as a bedroom or living space.
- The amount of boarding possible depends on headroom, roof structure (for example, trussed rafters) and access.
- Insulation and ventilation must be maintained — compressing insulation reduces its performance.
